EU gives Tajikistan €160,000 to help refugees from Afghanistan

These funds will be used to purchase food, tents and household items.

The European Union will give Tajikistan €160,000 in humanitarian aid for Afghan refugees, who have fled to the Central Asian country due to political instability in the IRA. Most of the funds will be used to purchase food, tents, dishware and clothes, the EU press office reported on September 14.

Humanitarian aid will be provided to about 5,000 refugees in the Khatlon and Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous regions. These essential items will also be handed over to the Afghan refugees who have accumulated at 7 border points.

Part of the funds will be used to prepare for a potential refugee influx. Humanitarian assistance will be provided through the Tajikistan Red Crescent Society.

According to UNHCR, about 50,000 refugees will arrive in the country by the end of the year. However, the authorities of Tajikistan deny that Afghan refugees are staying on the territory of the country, noting that the country has no money to provide asylum to Afghan citizens.
