President of Uzbekistan and Chancellor of Germany discuss situation in Afghanistan

The interlocutors exchanged views on the situation in the region in the context of the rapidly evolving events in Afghanistan and key issues on the bilateral agenda.

On August 18, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a telephone conversation with Federal Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel. An exchange of views on the situation in the region in the context of the rapidly evolving events in Afghanistan and key issues on the bilateral agenda took place during the conversation, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

Particular attention was paid to the convergence of the two states’ positions and approaches to preventing the exacerbation of tensions and violence in Afghanistan, as well as comprehensive assistance to the international community in a political settlement to the conflict in Afghanistan.

The emphasis was placed on the need to continue close coordination and active interdepartmental cooperation in conducting humanitarian evacuations of German nationals from Afghanistan in transit through the territory of the Republic.

The interlocutors agreed to maintain regular high-level contacts as the security situation evolved in the region.

As was reported, on August 17, the President of Uzbekistan had a meeting with Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during which the parties noted that the military and political escalations in Afghanistan could have negative consequences for regional and global security.
