President of Uzbekistan presents awards to Olympic athletes

On August 13, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev presented state awards to the coaches and athletes who had competed at the XXXII Summer Olympic Games. The gold medallists received US$ 200,000, the silver medallists – US$ 100,000 and the bronze medallists – US$ 50,000, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reported.

The Olympic athletes from Uzbekistan won 3 gold and 2 bronze medals and ranked 32nd among over 200 nations, second among the CIS countries and first among the Central Asia states. 3 Olympic records were broken.

19-year-old taekwondo practitioner Ulugbek Rashidov, who is the youngest Olympic champion in Uzbekistan, brought the first gold medal to the country. Weightlifter Akbar Zhuraev lifted 430 kg in total, set an Olympic record and won a gold medal. Boxer Bakhodir Jalolov fulfilled his promise to the leader of Uzbekistan and won the Olympic Games in the heavyweight category.

The promising members of the national martial arts school – judoka Davlat Bobonov and freestyle wrestler Behzod Abdurakhmanov won bronze medals.

The emphasis was also placed on the progressive development of women’s sports in Uzbekistan. This is evidenced by the performance of 28 female athletes from Uzbekistan at the Tokyo Olympic Games, which is a record number in the history of the independent country.
