Feminists of Kazakhstan ask President for protection

A group of men dispersed and beat the girls during the recent legal training of the organisation Feminita.

On July 30, the founders of the Feminita human rights feminist organisation of Kazakhstan Zhanar Sekerbaeva and Gulzada Serzhan sent a petition to President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev asking him to ensure safety during the thematic events, the Vlast information source reported.

Recently, several dozens of men have dispersed a women’s rights training organised by activists in Karaganda. Zhanar Sekerbaeva said the training focused on women’s rights, it was not some kind of ‘gays’ concert’. It complied with all quarantine regulations. A representative of the Karaganda administration came to the hall where the training was taking place and warned that an unfriendly group of people had gathered in the street.

The activists added that after the event was interrupted, they had to get to the bus through the aggressive crowd. It was not clear what was happening. For some reason, the girls began to be beaten in the face and body, and some of them were pulled by the hair. Their safety was not ensured, the Feminita leader said.

Zhanar and Gulzada said they had written a petition to President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev requesting him to assist in ensuring the safety of participants at events on the rights of women of Kazakhstan.

Addressing the leader of Kazakhstan, the activists referred to his speech at the Generation of Equality international forum, when the President said Kazakhstan was pursuing a progressive policy for women empowerment. In their petition, the feminists stressed, “We do not need to be killed during our events. We only call on the authorities to investigate human rights violations, especially violence against women.”
