United States repairs border post on Tajik-Afghan border

The repair cost the United States Government US$ 570,000.

On July 30, an official handover ceremony of a border post repaired by the US Government to the border troops at the State Committee for National Security of Tajikistan took place. The US Government spent US$ 570,000 on the project, the press office of the US Embassy in Dushanbe reported.

United States Chargé d’Affaires John Ginkel and Deputy Commander of Tajikistan’s Border Guard Forces Saodatzoda Rajab attended the ceremony. The border post is located in Shahritus district in Khatlon Region.

The American diplomat noted that this border post was to reinforce patrols capacity along the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan at a distance of 15-20 kilometres. This includes combating threats such as drug trafficking, smuggling, terrorist and extremist activities.

Ginkel emphasised that Washington would continue to assist Dushanbe to ensure border security. Over the past 30 years, the US Government had allocated over US$ 1.8 billion to Tajikistan to develop the private, agricultural and medical sectors, he said. More than US$ 155 million was spent on repairs and construction of border posts.
