Tajikistan declares unreadiness to switch to 12 years of schooling

According to the Adviser to the Head of the Agency for Supervision of Education and Science Naziri, discussion of this issue has been postponed until 2023.

On July 29, Adviser to the Head of the Agency for Supervision of Education and Science under the President of Tajikistan Latofat Naziri held a press conference. She said the country was not ready to switch to 12 years of schooling, the press office of the Ministry of Education reported.

Noting that Tajik schools were not prepared for innovations under existing conditions, she said the new education policy introduced hitherto one shift instead of two shifts, an expanded school curriculum and an increased number of classes.

The official emphasised that discussions on the transition to 12 years of schooling began in 2012 after President Emomali Rahmon had put forward the initiative in his annual address to Parliament in 2010.

The Ministry of Education planned to modernise the education system in 2016, but this didn’t happen due to the financial crisis. It was planned to do this in 2020, but the transition had been postponed until 2023, the Adviser said.

Naziri emphasised that the transition required changes in all school textbooks and teacher advanced training.
