Drug addicts grow in numbers in Tajikistan

More than 5,000 people who use psychotropic substances on a regular basis have been recorded in the Republic.

The number of illicit drug users grew by 25% in the Republic of Tajikistan in the first 6 months of the year. This information was presented by Director of the Drug Control Agency Khabibullo Vohidzoda at a press conference, the press office of the Drug Control Agency u reported on July 15.

He emphasised that more than 5,000 drug addicts had been recorded in the Republic. Males outnumber females among drug users. Females amount to 109. The increase of numbers was seen in those aged between 35 and 50.

Vohidzoda also noted that drug-related crimes had increased in Tajikistan. About 13,800 drug-related crimes were reported in first 6 months of the year, representing a 13% increase on the same period in 2020. He emphasised that the drug sector accounted for about 3.2% of the total number of crimes in the Republic.

This year, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the State Committee for National Security and the Drug Control Agency had seized more than 1.6 tons of heroin, opium, hashish, cannabis, potent psychotropic substances, synthetic tablets and powders, Vohidzoda reported.
