It is deeply symbolic for citizens of the country that the Capital City Day is celebrated on the same day as the birthday of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nur-Sultan. When translated literally, it means the Bright Ruler.

The first city of the state vividly illustrated the successful development of Kazakhstan after gaining independence, the Prime Minister noted. The capital symbolises the might and creative energy of the people, their dedication and ability to cope with difficulties.

Mamin reminded that the capital city was founded by the historic decision of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The capital had become the pride of the people and the locomotive of national economic development thanks to the efforts of every citizen of Kazakhstan, the Prime Minister said.

The city of Astana, and later Nur-Sultan, received the capital city status on December 10, 1997. Geographically, the ‘growing metropolis’ is located in the north of the country near the Ishim River. The city is divided administratively into 4 districts.
