New Friday mosque building opens in Andijan

The new building is built in the style of four aivans and four gates. It has the 54-meter-tall towers on both sides.

On June 17, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the new building of the Main Friday Mosque in Andijan Region, the opening ceremony of which he had attended. The new building is built in the style of four aivans and four gates. The 54-meter-tall towers are built on both sides, and the main hall is crowned with the dome with a diameter of 18 metres, the press office of the President of Uzbekistan reports.

The first mosque was built in Andijan in 1870. Construction work on this mosque began in 2018 and finished in May this year. Previously, the mosque could accommodate 5,000 people, but now it can accommodate over 15,000 visitors.

“We pay great attention to beautifying the holy sites and building new modern mosques and education centres throughout the country. We intend to continue this noble work. It is wonderful that one more mosque has appeared, where Muslims can freely and comfortably pray for the well-being of our country and people,” the President said.

After reading ayats from the Koran Mirziyoyev talked to the religious leaders. He asked them about the current state of affairs at the mosque and the conditions it offers serving the people and homeland.

“I am very grateful to engineers, builders and decorators, as well as benefactors who have made their worthy contribution to the construction of this holy site. I sincerely congratulate the people of Andijan on the new shrine. May it serve our noble people for many years,” the President said.
