Kazakhstan gives new impetus to gas industry

The President noted that the current model development of the gas industry was yielding no proper results and needed to undergo qualitative changes.

On June 17, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev held an online meeting to discuss the solutions for the diversification of the gas industry. The Minister of Energy, Chairman of the Board of Samruk Kazyna, akims of a number of regions and Nur-Sultan and the Chairman of Tengizchevroil took part in the meeting, the press office of Akorda reported.

The President noted that the current model development of the gas industry was yielding no proper results and needed to undergo qualitative changes.

“Most of the hydrocarbon deposits discovered over 30 years are oil shelves. No progress has been made in exploring and developing the gas fields on land and in the Caspian Sea. In this regard, it will be made a priority for the Government and the Samruk Kazyna Fund to expand the gas resource base through geological exploration,” the President said.

Tokayev noted that a key priority would be to increase the attractiveness to investors. The existing system functions in such a way that subsoil users are not interested in increasing gas production and building gas processing plants. The President instructed that the Government step up its work to attract investments in this niche.

The leader of Kazakhstan said KazTransGas would act as a national company and conduct activities across the entire spectrum – from geological exploration to the sale of final products. The Government was instructed to elaborate on all aspects and terms to grant it this right.
